Cleaning the office from top to bottom is a great way to maintain a pristine workspace, and get rid of allergens in the air. As dust settles most surfaces, it is important to consistently vacuum, wipe, or dust away the fixtures in the office to keep it well-maintained. One of the lesser noticed fixtures is the window blinds.
Whether you have fabric blinds, venetian blinds, real wood blinds or faux wood blinds, you will need to clean these at least once every week or every other week. Doing so will help get rid of potential allergens, and will keep your office completely clean overall.
What You'll Need
Cleaning blinds is fairly simple, especially if you have wooden blinds, plastic blinds, or other non-fabric blinds. You'll need a few tools, which you can find in most hardware stores and home improvement aisles. Here's what you'll need:
- Vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment
- Microfiber cloth or towel
- Scrub brush
- All-purpose cleaner:
- Vinegar and baking soda
- Lemon juice
- Water and dish soap
- Cleaning tool
- Tongs (optional)
How to Clean Blinds in the Office
Use a Vacuum Cleaner
The first step to cleaning blinds is to vacuum any loose debris from the blinds. Whether you have wood blinds, plastic blinds, or fabric ones, vacuuming the blinds will help remove any excess dust that could fly around the room.
Use a vacuum cleaner with the brush attachment to clean your blinds, and go over and under each panel to completely remove excess dust. Vacuum up the dust bunnies by the window pane as well, and reach the vacuum cleaner towards the top of the blinds to clean them as well. Vacuuming is also a good way to clean blinds on a regular basis.
Wash to Clean Fabric Blinds
Dust blinds made of fabric or fabric-like material will need to be vacuumed weekly, and washed at least once every month to maintain its cleanliness. There are two ways to wash fabric horizontal blinds: machine washing, and hand washing.
With machine washing, you can opt to use the laundry machine to clean soft fabric blinds, as directed on its care label. Blinds that cannot be machine washed must be hand washed, which you can do using soap, warm water, and a soft-bristled brush. Let the blinds completely dry before placing them back onto the windows.
Manually Wipe the Blinds Clean
You can opt to manually clean each panel of the blinds by taking a soft cloth, preferably a microfiber cloth, dampened with a cleaning solution. Plastic window blinds can be cleaned with vinegar and baking soda, which will remove dust, dirt, and oils easily.
When cleaning wood blinds, use a mixture of warm water with a couple of drops of dish soap instead as this solution won't stain or remove the color from the blinds. Clean blinds while they are still attached to the windows - you won't need to remove blinds from the wall!
Wipe the solution over and under each panel. You may need to keep a basin half-full of water to wring out the cloth, and remove excess dust. This will also help deep clean blinds as you won't be simply rearranging the dirt.
Use a Cleaning Tool to Clean Wood Blinds
Cleaning your blinds doesn't have to be a hassle as you can get a cleaning tool that can wipe both sides of your vertical blinds. These tools can be easily found online, and look similar to tongs with microfiber cloth pieces on each end. The tool was designed to clean blinds without any cleaning solution, so it's perfect for wooden blinds!
To use the tool, slip each end of the tongs between the panels of the blinds such that one panel is sandwiched between the microfiber cloth pieces. Start wiping the panel back and forth, and do the same to each panel of the blinds. Wash the microfiber cloth pieces afterwards, and hang to dry before using it again.
Use a Life Hack
Like the cleaning tool, you can use a life hack tool if you already have the items on hand. Take two kitchen sponges without the abrasive sides, and carefully cut a slit on the ends of each sponge. Slip the sponge over the ends of the tongs, and use it like how you would the blinds cleaning tool.
